The Berlin issue: 'Does Berlin Need a New Art School?', a survey of 30 contributors responding with statements and sketches

Over the past two decades, Berlin’s growth into an international art metropolis has brought many people to the city. A number of these imports teach art – seemingly in all other cities but Berlin. The city’s two schools providing full-scale arts education – the Universität der Künste (UdK) and the Hochschule Berlin Weissensee – were established long before 1989.

Since 2006, if not before, discussions about the UdK’s organizational and administrative politics have flared up – generated, for one, by the stepping down of Stan Douglas and Daniel Richter as professors, a development the UdK attempted to atone for by appointing prominent professors such as Olafur Eliasson (whose assignment though ends March 2014). Weissensee has seen an outflow of professors with international profiles to teaching posts in other cities – Karin Sander has taught in Zurich since 2007, Katharina Grosse in Düsseldorf since 2010 – and the school has gone the way of appointing guest professors and lecturers.

Reputations, ratings and capacities for reform aside, the question still presents itself whether Berlin, given its manifold art scene, is in need of new models and directions for its art education. In 2006–7, the one-year temporary project unitednationsplaza underscorred the city’s desire for an informal art school mediating its larger, international art discourse.

AT RAUMTAKTIK - Kunsthalle Düsseldorf
In cooperation with:
Something Fantastic

Project Discription: raumproduktion at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf is the start of a new series of exhibitions and interventions in the Seitenlichtsaal. The theme of this first year is “space” in all its forms. For the inaugural exhibition, Matthias Böttger was invited to curate an over view of the contemporary conditions of the production of space.
With his office raumtaktik – office from a better future – Matthias Böttger looks into the social, cultural,
economic, and political parameters of the everyday production of space. Topics such as globalization,
migration, scarcity, economic change, and privatization
are at the focus of their spatial intelligence and interventions.
Starting out from this inventory of the present,
raumtaktik, in collaboration with artists, designers, economists, and geographers, develops possible futures and options.

Dissensual Histories: 25 Years of The Power Plant is a dynamic project designed to exhibit, activate, reconsider, and put into dialogue the gallery’s rich histories. Designed by Markus Miessen, a German architect and writer who has considered the history of the institution at length and contributed to our thinking about participation in public space and design, our upstairs North Gallery is transformed into a space to consider our history within local and international contexts, as well as within present spatial and theoretical concerns.
Over an extended period, the space will offer visitors opportunities to see rotating artist interventions responding to our archives. It will also be a space in which talks will take place around The Power Plant’s history including a From the Archives series of talks and lively conversations between past curators and artists. In addition, special presentations organized around specific thematics such as institutional memory and Toronto’s contemporary art history will take place on site, making available print materials, video, slides, and other treasures from our vaults. Concurrently, the project will provide space for the sifting of materials, an opportunity to explore the archive as archive.

New Spatial Framework Proposal for the renovated Witte de With, particularly focused on the educational project.:

"Studio Miessen was invited by Defne Ayas, Witte de With’s recently appointed Director, to analyze the unique building of Witte de With, devise a series of space-specific interventions throughout the building, and re-develop its street-level presence.
Taking its cue from the history of Witte de With’s building, originally erected as a girls’ school in 1875, and later renovated into a technical school in the 1970’s, the Berlin-based collaborative agency Studio Miessen has developed a multitude of reflexive spaces that punctually intervene and activate specific areas across this 19th century construction. Through these interventions, spread over two floors and at the entrance, a space has been created that reflects the structures used in the educational system to structure an open and flexible space.
Hidden on the first floor, visitors will occasionally encounter the Consensus Bar, a temporal dark space behind a white curtain roll that functions as a shared space for social gatherings and events. Furnished with simple wood bench structures and a white fading smoke ceiling that rejuvenates every hour, the space echoes the structure of a hidden apse. Playing with the historical relationship between religious structures and educational systems, the room’s atmosphere is eerily similar to a religious setting for sacrilege and profanity. The space is shared with Rotterdam-based TENT and officially opens on Thursday 5 September.
Continuing the journey up into the exhibition floor, the visitor encounters two main spaces divided by the new reception front. In the first main space stands a multi-purpose yellow monolith. This giant modular cube consisting of sixty-four separate blocks constantly mutates in accordance to a series of events taking place in 2012, including Singh’s Causeries. This educational rehearsal space is wrapped by a grey blackboard stripe painted on the wall.
The second space houses a massive bleacher covered with AstroTurf, a synthetic field grass. Underneath this structure, an archival space containing publications and video displays has been built, producing an environment that feels simultaneously public and hidden. The back of the room also contains a reading table that allows visitors to have a more intimate experience with Singh´s ."

19 HOURS AT THE KIOSK

TEASER MOVIE

From the roof terrace of the HKW there is a view of the Reichstag and the Kanzleramt (Chancellery). These two massive symbols of political power loom up as if they were cruiseliners on the brink of collision. The HKW roof kiosk drifts between them like a life raft. Here Miessen creates an informal place of assembly. The kiosk changes from a hermetic vitrine to a walk-in display case. Around it the rooftop becomes a stage for readings, concerts, talks, film screenings and unexpected interventions; a participative forum in which the ‘public institution’ as such can be examined and updated in respect to its functionality and potential.

This project devised by Studio Miessen will produce, offer and perform a space for informal
politics, a space of discourse, set against the neighbouring formal-representative architectural
icons of German state power and ideology. Without attempting to foster any democratic pretence,
the project is interested in enabling and catering for individual yet joint production of autonomous
thinking and its multi-facetted ways of becoming. The project understands itself as a trigger, an
initial impulse towards a differentiated debate attempting to work around the central question –
proposed by Haus der Kulturen der Welt – of ʻArchitecture and Ideologyʼ.
